Birth Center at O'Connor Hospital

Labor & Delivery

The Birth Center at O’Connor Hospital has been the birthplace of 1,000 to 3,300 babies per year. Our family-centered care team provides comprehensive and compassionate care and includes obstetricians, gynecologists, neonatologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals. We offer a dedicated Obstetric Emergency Department (OBED) (link to OBED section) to provide timely and efficient emergency care to pregnant patients with unscheduled medical needs and our Level III NICU (link to NICU section) offers specialized care for high-risk babies.

During labor and delivery, mothers stay in one of our 12 private birthing suites and 18 private postpartum maternity suites, which include a private bathroom, television, and a sleeper chair for a partner or labor coach. Our neonatal intensive care unit is fully equipped with 10 licensed NICU beds. We also have seven beds available in our specialized OB Emergency Department (OBED), the only one of its type in Santa Clara County.

Our staff reflects the diversity of the patients we serve. Many of our doctors and nurses are bilingual with fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese. Our care team also includes interpreters who provide translation services 24/7 with expertise in over 120 spoken languages and dialects.

DELAYED CORD CLAMPING

Research has shown that delayed (umbilical) cord clamping for up to three minutes immediately following birth improves health outcomes for all babies. Delayed cord clamping was pioneered in our network and is now commonly practiced in hospitals worldwide.
