PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

​​Patients can expect to spend, on average, between two to three days in the hospital following bariatric surgery. Patients who undergo laparoscopic bariatric surgery tend to have a shorter hospital stay. During this time, a physical therapist will work with the patient each day to ambulate, promote circulation, and perform regular leg and breathing exercises.

Following the surgery, our physical therapists may prescribe an aerobic exercise program such as walking, stationary bike, elliptical or treadmill, swimming, along with a resistance training to add muscle strength and endurance during a patient’s weight loss journey.

Our therapy services will provide patients with:

Education

  • Modifications for activities of daily living (ADLs) and independent living (IADLs)

  • Energy conservation techniques

  • Home safety and body mechanics

  • Caregiver training as needed

Activities

  • Training using adaptive equipment

  • Increase endurance for selfcare tasks in standing

  • Prescribe home exercise routine

  • Refer to Outpatient PT and OT, exercise physiologist, nutritionist, as needed

  • Recommend community support group(s)​​
