OSTOMY CARE

Ostomy surgery is treatment for patients with certain gastrointestinal conditions. The procedure creates an opening in the abdomen called a stoma, creating a way for waste to leave the body. Our ostomy certified nurses assist with postsurgical visits for follow-up or problem resolution, and guidance and suggestions to promote holistic care. The team of specialized ostomy nurses and surgeons work with the patients on skills necessary to manage the new ostomy and adapt successfully to this change in their lives.

Examples of this surgery include:

  • Colostomy, in which a part of the colon gets diverted through a stoma
  • Ileostomy, in which the ileum (the smallest part of the colon) gets diverted through a stoma
  • Urostomy, in which urine gets directed away from the bladder
  • Ileal conduit, another method to direct urine away from the bladder
