At O’Connor Hospital, we offer bronchial thermoplasty, an advanced treatment that reduces the frequency and severity of asthma attacks for severe asthma sufferers.
How Bronchial Thermoplasty Works
This simple, minimally invasive treatment can improve quality of life for asthma patients who did not have success with other therapies. Bronchial thermoplasty is an outpatient procedure that works in this way:
- During an asthma attack, the airway muscles swell, narrowing the pathways into the lungs.
- With bronchial thermoplasty, mild heat removes excess smooth muscle from airways.
- This treatment widens passages and reduces the risk of an asthma attack.
Bronchial thermoplasty does not replace asthma medications but provides added protection from serious asthma symptoms. Our patients receive 3 sessions, 3 weeks apart by a trained pulmonologist. You then return to your regular physician to continue managing asthma.
